Latest round of state grants aim to ‘level the playing field’ for these 11 rural communities in Michigan
Eleven communities and organizations will share a total of $509,200.

What’s happening: A dedicated Economic Development Organization for Gogebic County. A more pedestrian-friendly Blue Star Highway in Saugatuck. Improved grant-writing capacity in places like Benzie County and the village of Edwardsburg, increasing the odds of securing large grants for economic development projects in rural communities often lacking the resources otherwise. Each of these projects and more have recently been announced as recipients of the state’s Rural Readiness Grant Program.
What it is: The fourth cohort of the Rural Readiness Grant Program was recently announced by the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO) and its Office of Rural Prosperity, the fourth round of a grant intended to stimulate economic activity in rural communities throughout the state. A total of 11 communities and organizations have been announced as winners, sharing in a total of $509,200.
Why it’s important: “This funding helps level the playing field for rural communities, giving them the tools they need to compete for economic opportunities just as strongly as larger urban areas,” says LEO Director Susan Corbin. “By investing in local projects that strengthen workforce, health, housing, infrastructure and economic development, we’re making sure every Michigander and community has the resources and support they need to thrive.”
Where it’s going: The 11 winning communities and organizations can be found throughout the state and each of its peninsulas, supporting community development and organizational capacity alike. In the Thumb Region, GST Michigan Works! receives support to expand and formalize its Employer-Led Collaborative workforce development initiative. Networks Northwest receives support for a program that trains high school students to volunteer for local government boards and commissions in Northwest Michigan. And Saugatuck Township wins a grant to plan and design a more pedestrian-friendly Blue Star Highway corridor, extend wastewater infrastructure, and increase housing supply.
