What’s happening: Coldwater continues its downtown revitalization efforts well into 2026, having recently announced new opportunities for artists and small businesses in the Branch County community. The city was also recently certified as “redevelopment ready” by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, opening additional pathways for economic and community development.

Making their mark: Coldwater opened applications to muralists and sculptors as the city seeks artists to bolster its public art footprint downtown, launching the Make Your Mark: Downtown Coldwater 2026 public art initiative. Two sculptures and one mural were installed thanks to a similar initiative in 2025, and city leaders hope to continue that momentum into ‘26. Artist have until Wednesday, April 1, to apply.

Down on Main Street: Coldwater also recently opened the application window for the Match on Main grant program, which is open from the beginning of March through Monday, April 20. The Match on Main grant program is available via the MEDC, providing up to $25,000 in reimbursement funding to eligible businesses strengthening downtown corridors and/or activating or improving commercial space. Applicants work with the city on their grant proposals and Coldwater has a proven track record in their implementation, having secured several such grants in ‘24 and ‘25.

Bona fides: To boot, Coldwater received its Redevelopment Ready Community (RRC) certification from the MEDC in late February, further demonstrating their commitment to further revitalizing their downtown. The program offers Michigan communities a collection of economic development best practices that, once met, indicate to investors that the community is an attractive place to do business. Developed by both the private and public sectors, the RRC program stresses transparency, predictability, and efficiency when it comes to economic development.

What they’re saying: “Our mission at MEDC is to support Michigan’s strong economic momentum and empower communities to establish a strong planning, zoning and economic development foundation,” says MEDC SVP of Community Planning & Development Readiness Michele Wildman. “The City of Coldwater is well positioned to continue to implement their vision for the future and further improve the quality of life for its residents. We look forward to building upon our relationship with the City of Coldwater and supporting local economic development efforts.”
