The 2026–27 PitchMI startup competition is officially open for applications until August 10, putting $2 million in investment capital on the line for high-growth Michigan founders.
Michigan is doubling down on its homegrown innovators. Applications are officially open for the 2026–27 PitchMI startup competition, putting more than $2 million in investment capital on the line to help local founders scale right here in the state.
The stakes are higher than ever this year. Startups will face off in four industry-focused regional semifinals this fall. Each regional winner will take home $250,000 before advancing to the statewide PitchMI Championship in Lansing to compete for an additional $1 million grand prize.
“PitchMI gives these entrepreneurs a stage that matches the quality of what they’re building,” says Ben Marchionna, MEDC’s Chief Innovation Ecosystem Officer. “Companies like these are how Michigan attracts exceptional talent, creates high-wage jobs, and builds a durable, innovation-driven economy.”
The Fall Semifinal Lineup:
- Defense & Aerospace: Grand Rapids (Sept. 15)
- AI & Software: Kalamazoo (Sept. 22)
- Advanced Manufacturing, Materials, & Outdoors: Marquette (Sept. 24)
- Healthcare & Life Sciences: Detroit (Oct. 1)
The backstory: Organized by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) and the MSU Research Foundation, PitchMI is one of the nation’s largest founder-focused tournaments. It builds on a powerhouse debut cycle that drew 375 applications from 100 Michigan communities and awarded more than $2.3 million. Last year, Ann Arbor-based gaming ad platform Adrenaline Interactive took home the $1 million grand prize, bringing its total PitchMI winnings to $1.375 million. Traverse City’s Electric Outdoors, Inc., creators of a portable off-grid utility canopy, was a regional winner in a previous year.
Why it matters: Michigan’s startup scene is thriving, backed by resources like the $60 million Michigan Innovation Fund. Over the past five years, state-led innovation investments have catalyzed more than 15,800 jobs and 1,400 high-tech companies. Even better: every $1 of public capital invested has helped founders leverage an exceptional $85 from outside private sources.
