$4 million in Michigan Rural Development grants available

Michigan is offering $4 million in Rural Development Fund grants for the 2027 cycle to support infrastructure, economic growth, and regional collaboration across the state’s rural communities, with letters of intent due by November 2, 2026.

What’s happening: Some $4 million is available in the latest round of Michigan’s Rural Development Fund grants to support projects that strengthen rural communities, infrastructure, workforce, and economic development, according to the Michigan Office of Rural Prosperity (ORP).

About the grants: The 2027 grant cycle includes two funding categories:

  • Category 1 (Community and Business Development): Grants up to $100,000 for infrastructure, facilities, workforce, and business development.
  • Category 2 (Regional Collaboration): Grants up to $200,000 for regional partnerships and shared-service models addressing multi-county needs.

Who is eligible: Eligible applicants include individuals, businesses, tax-exempt organizations, local governments, federally recognized Tribes, educational institutions, and economic development organizations. Projects must serve eligible rural areas in Michigan.

What they’re saying: “Through the Rural Development Fund, we are providing communities and regional partners with flexible resources to build capacity, strengthen local economies and advance projects that will make a lasting difference,” said Sarah Lucas, director of the ORP.
