MDOT invites applications for $5 million Maritime and Port Infrastructure Grant Program
The Michigan Department of Transportation is accepting applications for a $5 million grant program aimed at modernizing commercial port infrastructure, reducing environmental impacts, and improving freight reliability across the state.

What’s happening: The Michigan Department of Transportation has announced that the second round of the Michigan Maritime and Port Facility Assistance Grant Program is now accepting applications. Funded by a one-time $5 million appropriation in the fiscal year 2027 budget, the program aims to modernize commercial port infrastructure, lower freight transportation costs, improve reliability, and reduce environmental impacts.
What they’re saying: “Our ports and maritime facilities are critical connectors for Michigan’s industries and communities,” said State Transportation Director Bradley C. Wieferich. While noting that the current funding is temporary, Wieferich emphasized MDOT’s ongoing efforts to collaborate with partners to secure a long-term, sustainable funding source to build a stronger and more efficient maritime network.
Who is eligible: Eligible applicants include commercial port facilities and maritime stakeholders across Michigan. The funding will target projects that enhance safety, expand cargo capacity, and modernize the state’s waterborne transportation system. The program originally stems from legislation signed into law in 2022 to strengthen the state’s overall economic competitiveness.
What’s next: Interested applicants must submit their completed materials by the deadline on Wednesday, December 23, 2026. MDOT will make final project selections within 90 days of the deadline, with contract approvals expected to take about six weeks. Applications and inquiries should be directed to MDOT Freight Policy Specialist Elisha Wulff at WulffE@Michigan.gov.
