As an environmental quality analyst with the state and a volunteer with the Chippewa Watershed Conservancy, Blake Cahill blends science, service, and community engagement to safeguard native ecosystems and reconnect people with the natural world around them.
In rural Mecosta County, the annual Wheatland Music Festival offers "a break from our world," showcasing a variety of music, dance, and juried arts and crafts. The beloved festival also gives back to the community, which has been part of its mission since its humble beginnings 50-plus years ago.

Two Traverse City area woman worked with the Grand Traverse Regional Community Foundation to set up their estates to fund a permanent animal welfare endowment. Beginning in September, animal rescue organizations can apply for funds to cover services like spaying and neutering, emergency and life-saving veterinarian surgeries, trap-neuter-release programs, foster program assistance, and education.
"We believe this center can serve as a demonstration site for what’s possible when a community chooses to invest in its children and its caregivers," says Jennifer Wixson, NCMC’s Early Childhood Education program coordinator.
Michigan’s rural residents face different challenges when accessing mental health care than residents of urban areas. Transportation issues, loneliness, and limited group therapy options can compound their mental health needs. To address these challenges, community mental health (CMH) agencies like Sanilac County Community Mental Health innovate community-based solutions that meet their populations where they are at.
Hillsdale Hospital has launched Rural Health Strong, a communications and advocacy campaign to promote the value of rural health and encourage the nation to take action toward preserving it.
“The Certified Local Government program continues to be one of the strongest tools for supporting historic preservation projects at the local level,” says State Historic Preservation Officer Ryan M. Schumaker.
Michigan's Farm to Family Program awarded nearly $350,000 in grants to several "farm stops" across the state. The "farm stops" are small markets selling locally grown fruits, vegetables and other products.
